When I was at the dealership to buy my car, the car salesman gave me all these figures concerning my monthly payments, trade-in price and so on, but the numbers didn't quite add up. Why is the dealership's "numbers game" so confusing?

The dealership's "numbers game" is a complicated and confusing affair that works very much like the old "shell game" at the carnival. First, they get you to negotiate on several figures at once: your monthly payment price, the trade-in price, your down payment price and, possibly, even your interest rate. Then you quickly find that when you successfully negotiate one of the figures down, the other figures mysteriously rise. And every time you think you've figured it out, the numbers change again.
